AMAZING GRACE: A DREAM JOURNAL EXERCISE

Posted in DREAM JOURNAL EXERCISES, VICTORIA'S ARTWORK on November 24, 2010 by dreamingarts

Thanksgiving is the time of the year when our thoughts turn to the measure of grace in our lives. Grace is bestowed upon us without our conscious control or our egocentric will. Yet, grace most often comes into our lives through unexpected dangers, toils and snares. Dreams most often come as perplexing or nightmarish narratives. Neither Grace nor Dream can be created from desire or intention.

The fundamental doctrine of the International Association for the Study of Dreams (IASD) is that all dreams come in the service of healing and wholeness. Therefore, we explore dream journal techniques to acknowledge that the divine, omnipotent, omniscient cosmic spirit of Grace is always present in our dreamings.

Is there a moment of balance, beauty, purity, or simplicity in one of your dreams? Is there a sense of kindness or compassion? Is there a point of reconciliation? Is there an inexplicable spirit or presence that hovers through the dream landscape? Is there some quality of effortless renewal in your dream?

YOUR MISSION SHOULD YOU CHOOSE TO ACCEPT IT…

Unlike Inspiration that often comes as a lightening bolt, Grace comes as a whisper. Grace is the ultimate mystery of the universe. Allow found images from magazines to help you find hidden aspects of Grace in your dream. Surrender yourself to what you find and open yourself to what finds you. Embellish and beautify these precious, unexpected images in your journal.

ANIMA MUNDI: A DREAM JOURNAL EXERCISE

Anima Mundi is the soul of the world. It is the animating spirit in all matter and nature in the same way that the soul is the animating spirit in the human being. Similar to the Anima Mundi, every dream image, sensation, location is inextricably united with spirit. When we acknowledge the living presence within the dream, we can shift our attitude toward the landscape, the creatures, the sensations, the objects, the relationships, and the activities. We can dissolve the boundaries between the self and what we perceive as “other.” We can transform our sensations and experiences by viewing the dream world from a multitude of other perspectives.

YOUR MISSION SHOULD YOU CHOOSE TO ACCEPT IT…

Bring your dream images alive. Make a list poem with each of the images (both animate and inanimate.) Begin each line with “I am.” Endow every image with a voice.

MUMMY’S TOMB: A DREAM JOURNAL EXERCISE

Like the reliquaries, sarcophagi, vaults, crypts and pyramids, a dream is a sacred repository. In the dreamtime, our being changes into spirit as we journey in the dark of night into a world filled with symbolic figures, ancestral heirlooms, histories and great secrets.

YOUR MISSION SHOULD YOU CHOOSE TO ACCEPT IT…

Become an archeologist excavating your dream. Assume that you have no prior knowledge of the information and secrets inside this dream. Your task is to unearth artifacts from found images and text that evoke memories, emotions, and free associations from your dream narrative.

Create a deck of dream archeology cards from the relics you dig up.

DIA DE LOS MUERTOS: A DREAM JOURNAL EXERCISE

Posted in DREAM JOURNAL EXERCISES on November 2, 2010 by dreamingarts

Dreams often trigger our memories of beloved departed ones. We wake up haunted by a taste, a token, a touch, an encounter or a resemblance of someone we have loved and lost. Our recollection may be encoded in a span of time or merely in a moment. The location might elude us, the story might never end, but there is a “something certain” that hovers nearby in a word, a greeting or a voice. These special dreams can offer a moment of clarity, rapture, peace or love.

YOUR MISSION SHOULD YOU CHOOSE TO ACCEPT IT…

Create an internal homage to the memory of one of your most deeply felt dream images. Trace your sensory feelings and fragmentary thoughts into a loose interior monologue.  Use evocative, haunting sounds and words in a continuous reverie of reliving, honoring or mourning. Experiment with your prose. Allow your thoughts to tumble out unstructured and chaotic.
